Ceramic Coating vs Dealer Paint Protection on a New Car: What You're Actually Paying For
You've signed the paperwork, picked the colour, and then the finance manager slides one more option across the desk. Paint protection. Usually somewhere between one and three thousand dollars, with a warranty and a promise that your paint will look new for years.
It's one of the most common questions we get at our Prestons studio from people buying a new car in Sydney. Is dealer paint protection worth it, or should you get a ceramic coating done by a detailer instead? This is an honest breakdown of what each one actually is, what you're paying for, and why so many owners who went the dealer route end up at our door a year later.
What dealer paint protection usually is
Dealer paint protection is a product applied to your car before delivery, usually by a third party contractor or by staff at the dealership's prep yard. The product itself varies a lot. Some are polymer sealants, some are marketed as ceramic, and some are closer to a wax with a long warranty attached.
The application is normally done fast. Cars are prepped in volume, often outdoors or in a shared bay, and the priority is getting the vehicle ready for handover on time. In most cases the paint is washed and the product is wiped on. It is rarely machine polished first, and it is almost never inspected under proper lighting.
The warranty is what the dealer is really selling. Read it closely. Many of these warranties require annual inspections, the use of a specific maintenance kit, and they cover a narrow list of damage such as bird dropping etching. Claims often need to be lodged within a short window. Swirl marks, scratches and loss of gloss are usually not covered at all.
What a professional ceramic coating is
A ceramic coating is a liquid coating that bonds to your clear coat and cures into a hard, glossy, chemical resistant layer. Done properly, it makes the car far easier to wash, resists UV and bird droppings, and keeps the paint looking deep and wet for years.
The coating is only half the job though. The difference between a coating that looks incredible and one that locks in problems comes down to preparation. That's where a studio install and a dealer application separate completely.
Why a brand new car still needs paint correction
This surprises most people. A car that has never been driven can still arrive with swirl marks, marring from dealer washes, transport marks, water spots, holograms and sometimes sanding marks left over from the factory. On dark colours you'll see it the first time the sun hits the bonnet.
Every new car we coat gets a proper decontamination and a machine polish before any coating goes on. We've had brand new Audis, Mercedes and Mustangs arrive with visible defects on delivery day. If a coating goes over those defects, they're sealed in underneath a hard layer for the life of the coating. That's why we include paint correction as part of every new car coating package rather than treating it as an optional extra.
Ceramic coating vs dealer paint protection, side by side
Product quality. Dealer products vary and are often chosen on cost. We install certified CarPro coatings including CarPro DQuartz Pro, CarPro Finest Reserve and CarPro Professional. You know exactly what product is on your car and what it's rated for.
Preparation. Dealer application is usually a wash and wipe. A studio install includes a full wash, iron and tar removal, clay decontamination, paint depth readings, machine correction, and a panel wipe to strip polishing oils so the coating bonds properly.
Environment. Coatings need clean, controlled conditions to cure properly. Dust, heat and humidity all affect the result. Our work is done indoors in a dedicated studio, not in a yard between deliveries.
Who does the work. At Infinity Detailing Studio the person you talk to is the person who works on your car. Nothing is handed off to a contractor you've never met.
Warranty. Our coatings come with both a manufacturer warranty and a personal warranty from us. More importantly, you're dealing with one local business that stands behind the work, rather than a claims department.
Gloss and finish. Because the paint is corrected first, a professionally coated car looks noticeably better than it did on delivery. A dealer application generally leaves the paint as it arrived, defects included.
What about cost?
Dealer paint protection often costs about the same as a professional ceramic coating, and sometimes more once it's rolled into finance and you're paying interest on it for five years. The difference is where the money goes. With a dealer package, much of the price covers margin and the warranty product. With a studio install, you're paying for hours of hands on correction, a professional grade coating and the skill to apply it properly.
If you're comparing quotes, ask each provider three simple questions. Will the paint be machine polished before the coating goes on? What exact coating product is being used? Who is actually doing the work? The answers tell you most of what you need to know.
Can you still get a ceramic coating if you already paid for dealer protection?
Yes. This is a big part of our work. If a dealer product has been applied, we assess the paint, decontaminate it, and machine polish the surface. That process removes the old sealant along with any defects, leaving a clean base for a proper CarPro coating. You may want to check the terms of your dealer warranty before you do this, but for most owners the improvement in finish is worth it.
The best time to coat a new car
The ideal time is as soon as possible after delivery, before the car picks up swirls from washing, fallout from sitting outside, or bird and bat droppings. Bat droppings are a real problem across south west Sydney and can etch unprotected clear coat surprisingly fast.
The smart move is to decline the dealer protection, take delivery, and book your car straight in for a coating. Many of our clients drive from the dealership directly to our studio in Prestons. We look after new car owners across Liverpool, Edmondson Park, Campbelltown, Moorebank and the surrounding suburbs. If you're local, have a look at our ceramic coating Liverpool page as well.
Protecting the rest of the car
Paint isn't the only thing that wears. Leather bolsters, light coloured seats and carpets on a new car mark up quickly. Our interior protection service coats leather and fabric so spills and dye transfer wipe away rather than soak in. It pairs well with an exterior coating when you're protecting a new car from day one.
Keeping a coating at its best
A coating makes maintenance easier, not unnecessary. Safe washing with the right products keeps it performing. If you'd rather not do it yourself, our maintenance detailing plans keep coated cars looking the way they did the day they left the studio.
Frequently asked questions
Is dealer paint protection worth it?
For most owners, no. You'll typically pay a similar amount to a professional ceramic coating but get less preparation, a less transparent product and a warranty with a lot of conditions. A properly installed coating gives you better gloss, better protection and a clear line of accountability.
Does a new car need paint correction before ceramic coating?
Yes. New cars regularly arrive with swirls, marring and transport marks. Correcting the paint first means the coating locks in a flawless finish rather than sealing in defects.
How long does a ceramic coating take to install?
Most new car coatings take around two days, depending on the paint condition and the coating chosen. That time allows for proper correction and for the coating to cure indoors.
Can I wash my car straight after a ceramic coating?
We'll give you aftercare instructions on pickup. In general, you'll want to avoid washing for the first week while the coating fully cures.
